Everton 2-3 Liverpool: Ceri Holland scores stunner as 10-player visitors hold on to win WSL Merseyside derby

Ten-player Liverpool held on to beat rivals Everton 3-2 in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, a result that sees them move eight points clear of the Women's Super League relegation zone.

Gareth Taylor's side started the game strongly and deservedly took the lead when Ceri Holland calmly converted a penalty following a clear handball by Everton's Inma Gabarro (11).

Everton struggled to deal with their rivals' intensity in the first half and fell further behind nine minutes later when Martina Fernandez headed Alejandra Bernabe's left-wing cross past a hapless Courtney Brosnan (20).

Scott Phelan's team improved before the break but couldn't half the deficit and were three down when Holland produced a wonderful run and finish to silence the home crowd which appeared to have put the result beyond doubt (41).

But Everton hit back 19 minutes into the second half through Aurora Galli's deflected free-kick and were given a further boost when Liverpool captain Grace Fisk was shown a second yellow card for tripping Zara Kramzar (66).

Kramzar, who had earlier struck the crossbar from close range, then set up a tense finale when she slotted past Jennifer Falk in stoppage time (90+1), but Liverpool held on for their first away league win of the season.

The victory puts them on 17 points with three matches remaining. West Ham are a place further back on 12 points with a game in hand, with bottom side Leicester on nine points with two games in hand. Everton stay sixth and are now just three points ahead of their local rivals.
